Step street raises concerns in Kingsbridge Heights
Step streets in hilly areas such as Kingsbridge Heights are meant to be shortcuts, but residents say at least one is more of a hazard than convenience.
The public staircase at Heath Avenue and Summit Place is lined with cracks, garbage and graffiti. There are railings to help users traverse up and down, but residents say the steps can still be tough for people of all ages to navigate.
Nearby residents say the city has fixed the steps in the past, but they always fall back into disrepair. They also say that non-functioning lights are also a problem, especially at night.
News 12 reached out to the Department of Transportation about the safety concerns, but has not heard back.
