Safety changes wanted on Riverdale 'speedway'

Residents are demanding changes on part of a Riverdale road that they liken to a NASCAR racetrack.

Community leaders say there are no traffic lights on a half-mile stretch of Broadway, which has no street corners between 242nd and 251st streets, allowing cars to go racing through.

Pedestrians are now calling for more options to allow them to safely cross the street in the area. They want the city to put in crossing lights, a stop sign or even an overpass.

The speed limit on the road is 25 mph, just like the rest of the city, but residents say that doesn't stop drivers from speeding.

The portion of Broadway is also right next to Van Cortlandt Park, which raises more concerns about kids who go there to play.

The Department of Transportation tells News 12 that it's already looking into possible safety improvements on the street.
