Bronx celebrates Nutrition Kitchen grand opening
The city's first-ever NeON Nutrition Kitchen has opened up in the South Bronx.
The Neighborhood Opportunity Network (NeON) cafe aims to help the families of those who are on probation obtain affordable, nutritious foods, as well as healthy eating education.
"I'm a single dad and it's very hard, and to get food and jobs these days is very hard," says client Thomas Torres. "But with places like this, I'm really welcome. I'm excited to tell the truth."
The initiative will not only provide food, but also nutrition education through food demonstrations and seminars from the city's top chefs.
Officials add that the Nutrition Kitchen goes far beyond a typical food pantry because it provides a comfortable environment for probation families who may feel stigmatized and discouraged from receiving food at soup kitchens or other community sources.
The grand opening is the first of five set to open in each of the boroughs. It's also just one of the events happening on 161st Street as part of the Bronx's 4th Annual Health and Harmony Day, a health fair filled with vendors, live music and free giveaways. It is being utilized as a way to promote healthy lifestyles.
