Tenant fearful over broken building lock after nearby rape
Tenants in Riverdale say they have been living in fear after the lock on their building was broken over the course of a weekend that saw a nearby rape.
Police say that a young woman was raped at an apartment building on Saturday just steps away from the building at 6035 Broadway in the Bronx.
"I didn't want to leave my apartment because I didn't feel safe," says resident Annemarie Coyle. "I didn't know who could be in the lobby or the hallway."
Coyle says that her building management sent a locksmith to fix the front door on Monday. She says it had not been locking properly since Thursday.
"It was terrifying knowing that there was a rapist out there and that our lobby door didn't lock," Coyle says. "I emailed the management company and the board members probably two or three times. Nobody would answer my emails."
Management tells News 12 that the building was locked over the weekend and presented no danger to the residents.
