Eric Garner family says money isn't justice
Loved ones say that a multimillion-dollar settlement in the police chokehold death of Eric Garner isn't justice or a victory.
The Staten Island family appeared with the Rev. Al Sharpton Tuesday, just one day after the city's $5.9 million settlement was announced and just days before the anniversary of the 43-year-old's death.
Garner's widow, Esaw Garner, spoke briefly saying in part, "I'd been married 28 years....and now I have no one but my children. I'm alone to deal with this for the rest of my life."
Garner died after he was put in an apparent chokehold by Officer Daniel Pantaleo back on July 17 of last year. The entire incident was captured on cellphone video.
A grand jury later declined to indict Pantaleo, but the Garner family is pressing for federal civil rights charges.
Mayor Bill de Blasio responded to the settlement, saying that police-community relations have made great progress, but much still needs to be done. The head of the Sergeants Benevolent Association called the settlement "obscene" and "shameful."
