A Bronx restaurant has declared the first Saturday in August "National Jamaican Patty Day."
To emphasize the idea, the Golden Krust on Gun Hill Road held a fair with live entertainment, face painting and even a photo booth for its customers. The shop also handed out free patties.
Jamaican beef patties are meat-filled, gold-colored stuffed treats sometimes served spicy or sweet.
The highlight of the party is a raffle offering free patties for a year and a round-trip to Jamaica.
Jamaicans celebrate their independence day and emancipation in August as well.
