NYCHA tenants fear for safety due to broken sidewalk
Senior citizens in East Tremont say they fear for their safety even when performing the most mundane tasks, like running their errands, due to a broken sidewalk.
Tenants at the Twin Park East, a NYCHA housing development situated on East 180th Street, say the craters in the building's sidewalk are dangerous. They say they fear they will fall and injure themselves.
Queen Mcfarland, a tenant who has been living in the area for 40 years, told News 12 that she has had to walk in the middle of the street in order to avoid the decrepit sidewalk.
Councilman Ritchie Torres told News 12 he has been pressuring the DOT to repair those sidewalks and will soon introduce legislation that requires them to immediately repair sidewalks in front of senior-only NYCHA buildings.
The Department of Transportation says it is aware of the concerns regarding the sidewalk at the site and will work with NYCHA to ensure the safety of the tenants. The department also says it will prioritize the repair of the facility.
Two weeks ago, NYCHA and the Department of Transportation announced they would be tripling city investments to repair NYCHA sidewalks.
