BX leaders, health experts take on childhood obesity
Bronx leaders and health experts came together Friday in an effort to combat childhood obesity in Hispanic youth.
The National Health Foundation met at Urban Health Plan for a panel to discuss the issue. The group is trying to come up with ways to reduce childhood obesity.
September is National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month, as well as Hispanic Heritage Month.
Health experts tell News 12 The Bronx that the childhood obesity issue among the Hispanic youth can be deadly.
"It is very scary being overweight and obese. It effects every other organ system, it leads to diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart issues. Everything you can think of is related to obesity," said Dr. Acklema Mohammad, from Urban Health Plan.
Urban Health Plan encourages families to come in and tap into services they have available to tackle the issue.
