Local leaders are raising awareness about domestic violence to help keep families safe.
There have been new public service announcements inside taxi cabs and online, but Commissioner Rose Pierre-Louis and others are taking the message to the streets.
The activists and local leaders passed out fliers and information Thursday as a first step in combating the city's domestic violence issue.
They want everyone to know that there is a place to go for help in every borough, including local family justice centers.
The city says in recent years, reported domestic violence incidents citywide have trended downward, but not in the Bronx. In the Bronx, it went up around 100 cases from 2013 to 2014.
The city has set up a campaign called #upstander, which was a part of Thursday's efforts. They had people write on a card why they are an upstander and not a bystander.
While October is Domestic Violence Awareness month, officials say the problem happens every day, and they will continue to spread the world to combat domestic violence.
