Sen. Klein accuses Herbalife in pyramid scheme
State Sen. Jeffrey Klein has accused Herbalife, a multinational nutrition company, of scamming immigrant families out thousands of dollars.
A report released by Sen. Klein's office alleges that Herbalife International Inc. targeted Latino immigrants in a pyramid scheme.
Public Advocate Letitia James, several council members and apparent victims joined Klein as he made the announcement Tuesday from his Manhattan office.
The office of Sen. Klein examined 56 complaints filed with the attorney general's office and the Federal Trade Commission.
According to the report, Herbalife took millions of dollars collectively from the victims after purporting to offer them business opportunities.
The company is known for selling nutrition, weight-management and fitness products.
A representative of Herbalife says the company is being targeted by a "witch hunt."
