A 17-year-old boy who was appointed to Community Board 10 over the summer is enjoying his new gig and quickly gaining respect.

John Michael Provetto says a man by the name of Louis Goldstein told him that a law was passed that allowed 16- and 17-year-olds to join the board. That prompted Provetto to go after the position and become the youngest member to serve on the board at age 16.

"What better way to get up close and personal with the community than by actually being on the board," Provetto says. He says some of his duties include approving liquor licenses, going through community planning and working on the city budget.

The Salesian High School senior and honor student is also receiving praise from his fellow board members.

"He can look at things we've been looking at for the past 20 years and say, 'Well you know how about thinking about this,'" says Kenneth Kearns, the district manager of Community Board 10. The members say they feel Provetto brings a unique perspective to the board.

Provetto says he plans to remain on the board after he graduates as long as he goes to college in New York.
