Charter school lacks safe recess area for kids
Students at the Bronx Charter School on Longfellow Avenue are unable to enjoy recess the way most children do. School officials say they do not have a playground, so instead, the children play in the streets.
To keep students safe, the staff says they use cones to block off the street near the school.
The charter school has been without a playground since it opened its doors more than 10 years ago, according to school officials.
The community board has recently approved a measure that would restrict parking during school hours, which they say will provide a much safer outdoor experience for students during recess.
The changes to street parking will have to be made by the Department of Transportation. Members at the agency say they are looking into the request.
In the meantime, school officials say the students' playtime remains limited. Students and staff hope to have a designated space for recess in the next couple of months.
