Local officials and first responders are teaming up with the American Red Cross in an effort to prevent fires from destroying homes and businesses in the Bronx.
The American Red Cross responded to about 300 fires in the Bronx in 2014 alone.
Officials say many of the homes and businesses that caught fire did not have working smoke alarms.
A newly launched social media campaign, #GetAlarmedNY, aims to reduce the number of fire deaths and injuries.
Volunteers from the American Red Cross are signing up residents to participate in the campaign.
Those who sign up will have combination smoke and carbon monoxide alarms installed in their home free of charge.
Organizers say the installation takes about 15 minutes and can save lives in the event of a fire.
