A Bronx man required treatment in an intensive-care unit after his stay at a police holding cell in the 49th Precinct.
Police arrested Samuel Reyes Tuesday in connection with a pair of armed robberies. They held him overnight at the precinct building on Eastchester Road.
On Wednesday, police say they found the 49-year-old unconscious and unresponsive inside his cell. Detectives say Reyes hanged himself.
They rushed him to Jacobi Medical Center, where his family says doctors have told them things are not looking good.
Reyes is unresponsive and remains on life support. He has four children and six grandchildren.
Family members dispute the notion that Reyes hanged himself, saying the marks appear "too neat," but hospital officials have agreed with the police assessment.
Doctors also say they found that Reyes had bruises, scratches and fractured ribs when he arrived at the hospital.
