Lawyer calls for special investigation into man’s death
Family members of the Bronx man who died as a result of injuries sustained in police custody continue to dispute the official version of his death, three days into the investigation.
The family has hired a lawyer who is requesting a special prosecutor to look into deadly police interactions.
Police say Samuel Reyes, 49, hanged himself in his holding cell with a length of cloth torn from his clothes.
Family members insist that Reyes would not have committed suicide.
Reyes had been arrested in connection with an armed robbery last Wednesday. Police say they found him unconscious and unresponsive Thursday morning.
The NYPD's Force Investigation Unit is probing Reyes' death.
The funeral for Reyes will be Friday at Ortiz Funeral Home on Westchester Avenue.
