NYPD detective among 6 dead in suicide bombing
A suicide attacker killed six Americans in Afghanistan Monday, including an NYPD detective who served as a member of the US Air National Guard.
Staff Sgt. Joseph Lemm, of West Harrison, was among the group targeted as they moved through a village near Bagram Airfield, the largest U.S. military facility in Afghanistan, NATO and Afghan officials said. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack.
NYPD Commissioner Bratton said in a statement, "Detective Joseph Lemm epitomized the selflessness we can only strive for: putting his country and city first."
Lemm was a 15-year veteran of the NYPD and promoted to detective in January 2014. He served in the Bronx Warrant Squad.
While a member of the NYPD, he was deployed three times, twice to Afghanistan and once to Iraq.
He leaves behind a wife and two children.
