Prosecutors: Father admitted to choking son
A Bronx father accused of killing his 2-month-old son and burying the body in upstate New York appeared before a Manhattan judge Wednesday.
Prosecutors say Jose Feliciano declined to testify before a grand jury on murder and manslaughter charges.
They say Feliciano also faces assault charges in a separate case in which he allegedly attacked a man and damaged property inside a Cruger Avenue home on July 22.
Feliciano allegedly smothered his son, Mason Whyte, in his Bogart Avenue home on Dec. 10 after the baby would not stop crying. Police say he told them he accidentally killed the child in a four-hour videotaped interview.
Prosecutors say that Feliciano also told police that he and the baby's mother tried to perform CPR on the child before stuffing his body in a duffel bag and driving upstate.
Surveillance video outside the couple's apartment on the night in question appears to show a man carrying a small duffel bag to a car.
Officials say that after the boy died, Feliciano and his girlfriend, Mason's mother, drove upstate to Dutchess County to bury the body.
Feliciano was arrested Sunday, after officials say Mason's mother confided in hospital workers in Westchester about her son's death.
Police found the body in a wooded area. An autopsy found that the child also had signs of a skull fracture.
The mother has not been charged, and Feliciano is set to appear in court on Jan. 12. He is being held without bail.
