Overall crime decreased throughout the city in 2015, according to the mayor and police commissioner, but major crimes increased.
Crime reports were at their lowest since the late '90s, according to officials.
Overall crime shrank by 1.7 percent in 2015, and 5.8 percent over the last two years, according to statistics provided by the NYPD.
But so-called major crimes, which include murder, rape and robbery, increased. There were 17 more murders in 2015 than 2014, up 4.5 percent, and 42 more rapes, up 6 percent.
Robberies also increased by 2 percent, with subway robberies fueling an 11 percent increase in transit crimes.
Broken down by borough, Manhattan and the Bronx saw spikes in overall crime, with 3 percent and 4 percent increases, respectively.
Mayor Bill de Blasio says the crime statistics prove that the city has become safer and fairer.
