Lawmakers and community leaders are rallying for extended ferry plans in the northwest Bronx.

Last year, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced plans for five new ferry routes in the city to help local commuters in Soundview, parts of Queens, Brooklyn and the Lower East Side in Manhattan. 

 

Commuters living in Riverdale want a piece of the action. They say their options for traveling into Manhattan's business district are congested, limited and expensive.

The only subway access is on the local No. 1 train, and most Riverdale residents need to take a bus to get to the station. And a one-way ticket to take the Metro-North from Riverdale to Grand Central Station is $8.75 during peak hours.

Most options take at least an hour to get to downtown Manhattan.

Local leaders and transportation officials are calling for the city to adopt their proposal as part of a broader, five-borough ferry service plan.
