63-year-old man killed in Tremont house fire
A 63-year-old homeless man believed to be squatting inside an abandoned house in the Bronx died after a two-alarm fire broke out inside the home.
Police say it happened after midnight on Crotona Avenue in Tremont. Firefighters were able to put the fire out around 3 a.m. and discovered the man's body on the first floor a short time later.
Officials say although the house is abandoned, police have received numerous complaints of homeless people squatting in the home since 2012.
Neighbors fear the man who died may have been a homeless man they recall as being "joyful" often frequenting outside the abandoned property to sell various items he had for extra cash.
The fire tore through the home completely gutting it.
Officials say they are also questioning two other people who may have been inside the home at the time of the fire.
They have not identified the victim.
