Police ID Allerton hit-and-run victim
Police say a hit-and-run driver struck a woman on Williamsbridge Road near Waring Avenue in Allerton Monday night.
Police say Madeline Bengochea, who is in her late 40s, was attempting to cross the road around 10:30 p.m. when she stopped in the middle of the street to let traffic through. A four-door, white 1980s Cadillac struck her and then fled the scene.
Surveillance video shows bystanders rushing to the woman's aid after the crash. She was taken to Jacobi Medical Center, where officials say she is in critical condition.
Investigators say surveillance video shows the first three letters of the vehicle's license plate are G-A-X. Witnesses described the driver as an elderly man.
Bengochea's friends say she lives across the street and had gone to the supermarket, where her daughter works. She remained in critical condition Tuesday night.
Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS.
