NYC step dance teams compete in qualifying round

Step dance teams from all over New York City gathered in the Bronx Saturday night for a chance to compete for a national championship.

Hundreds of step fans came to I.S. 217 to watch schools battle it out during the annual National Step League event.

Three out of the eight teams competing in the qualifying round are from the Bronx. Teams are judged on creativity, synchronization and dance moves.

Organizers say the program is designed to create academic enrichment opportunities for the students.

The National Step League will give out $25,000 in scholarship money during the national championship in George in June.
