Cat on rooftop evades latest rescue effort
It's been more than a week since a cat became stuck on the roof of an old correctional facility in Hunts Point, and rescuers remain unable to take it to safety.
Firefighters again tried to retrieve the animal Monday afternoon, but the cat hid from them when they reached the roof. They previously made the 100-foot climb last week.
They also scoured the inside of the building Monday.
"We checked the stairwell very carefully," says FDNY Capt. Jim Halaby, of Ladder 48. "It's a mystery. I think he might be hiding in a duct like a drainpipe up there, but I don't know."
The firefighters say they left food and a blanket on the roof. They plan to wait before mounting another rescue effort.
