Report: Domestic abuse in public housing on the rise
A new report from the City Council found that domestic violence crimes in public housing have risen dramatically in the last five years.
The report, released by the Public Housing Committee, says there were 809 domestic crimes reported in NYCHA buildings back in 2009. Last year, the number rose to more than 1,600.
Kimberly Kavern, director of Safe Horizon, says while the number appears startling, it could also mean that more people are reporting incidents and reaching out for help.
A NYCHA spokesperson testified at Tuesday's hearing that 224 residents have already received an emergency transfer to safe housing this year.
