Robotic pharmacist used at St. Barnabas Hospital

A Bronx hospital is using special technology in its pharmacy that no other hospital in New York City uses.

Riva is a robotic pharmacist that processes, measures and dispenses medication. Dr. Ruth Cassidy, the hospital's chief pharmacy officer, says Riva eliminates human error and there is little to no risk of contamination.

Riva is kept in a clean room with air that is filtered 30 times an hour to ensure the safety of their patients. Pharmacists who use Riva have to sanitize and scrub down completely before entering the room.

The system has been used at the hospital since 2012. The hospital has now implemented a special interface with Riva to handle more detailed prescription instructions.
