Lawmakers want stiffer penalties for assaults made on taxi drivers

NEW YORK -

New York lawmakers want stiffer penalties for crimes committed against taxi drivers.

State Assembly members introduced Monday an amendment to the Taxi Driver Protection Act.

Under new provisions, lawmakers say the penalty for assaulting a taxi driver would be considered a felony offense.

The new law would also require a sign inside of taxis that would inform passengers of the legal consequences of assaulting drivers.
