Bronx doctor offers advice on combating seasonal allergies

Dr. Joan Lehach, a certified allergist in the Bronx, has some advice on how to beat allergy season.

Sneezing, coughing and itchy skin are all symptoms of allergies, Lehach says.

"When you think about trees, the pollen is falling all around you. So it bothers your eyes and your skin and can get into your hair and in your clothes," she says. "Things you can do [are] when you're outside, wear long sleeves or a hat or [take] over the counter medication"

Lehach says there are many over the counter medicines you can take, including Benadryl, Claritin or Zyrtec, but she says steer clear of over the counter eye drops.

"I would not recommend over the counter eye drops. I find that most people who use them say it stops working and their eyes become more itchy."

She says if your allergy symptoms persist for weeks, you'll need to see an allergist and get tested.
