Volunteers clean up at Mott Haven community center

Volunteers from multiple city organizations helped to clean up trash and plant flowers at a community center for their Green Day event in the Bronx Wednesday.

Organizers gathered at the Betances Community Center on East 146th Street where they began their spring cleanup.

Among them were members of the NYCHA Youth Leadership Council, a group of 14- to 21-year-old public housing residents who helped spearhead the event.

The event introduces volunteers from neighboring communities so that they can better understand one another.

The project as a whole advocates non-violence and a clean community, organizers say.
