Work begins on Van Cortlandt Park skate park

The city Parks Department broke ground on a new skate park Tuesday in Van Cortlandt Park.

"The skate park community has grown by leaps and bounds," says Iris Rodriguez-Rosa, the Bronx parks commissioner. "So we want to make sure that in different areas in the Bronx we have this amenity."

The project will install concrete ramps, stairs and rails for skateboarders at the city's third-largest park.

Skaters like Bert Correa and Michael Alfano helped architects design the layout.

The skate park will open by spring 2018, parks officials say.
