Soundview section still without supermarket after 18 months

Residents in a section of Soundview have gone without a local supermarket for around 18 months and may have to keep on waiting, despite a plan to open one at the end of last year.

ShopRite planned to open a store by the end of 2016 following the closure of the community's last supermarket, a Key Food. That opening never happened.

Neighbors say the next-nearest supermarket is Western Beef, across the Bruckner Expressway. To spare themselves the journey, residents like Doreen Frimpong say they shop at smaller local groceries that are more expensive.

According to one spokesperson, a new ShopRite will open in the area by spring 2018.
