BronxConnect, major employers team up to help job seekers
Bronx residents searching for employment found some opportunities Thursday during a job fair hosted by the community organization BronxConnect.
Some companies hiring included Starbucks, Speedway, Indeed, New York Sports Clubs, NYCHA, New York Life, LWS Homecare and UnitedHealthcare. They were hoping to fill many positions from sales associates to district managers.
BronxConnect Executive Director Rev. Wendy Calderon-Payne says employment is crucial to keeping people out of incarceration. She says the organization teaches job seekers how to prepare resumes, make connections and give themselves the best possible chance to earn a position.
The event follows last week's release of unemployment numbers in the Bronx. The data from the state Labor Department shows that the rate fell from 7.7 percent in February 2016 to 6.5 percent in February 2017.
Last year, more than 200 people showed up to the Bronx Connect job fair.
