Bronx softball coach awarded $20,000 on Ellen

A softball coach from the Bronx was featured on the Ellen Degeneres show.

Christopher Astacio was awarded with $20,000 when he appeared on the show for his achievement in making a difference in the Bronx community and in the lives of the girls he coaches.

The all-girls softball team at Jordan L. Mott Middle School, also known as the 'Lady Tigers,' practice on Heritage Field on East 161st Street.

"He's just a great role model for me because he pushes me to do things that I think I cannot do," one girl says.

The girls say coach Astacio has taught them a lot of valuable lessons on and off of the field.

"I care about these girls and I want to see them happy because they deserve to be happy. They go through so much in life," Astacio says.

But it hasn't always been easy for the father of two who is still going through remission from a recent stomach cancer diagnosis.

"I feel like these girls were like my cure from cancer. They helped me to motivate myself to be great," he says.

Astacio says he will donate the $20,000 to a not-for-profit called The Fund for Public Schools.
