Construction underway for Tremont affordable housing

Construction is underway in the West Bronx for one of the city's largest mixed-income developments.

What was once a vacant lot at the corner of East Tremont Avenue and Webster Avenue will soon be 256 units of housing and 40,000 square feet of commercial space.

The largest of the planned buildings will be mixed-income housing and will include 81 parking spaces, health and fitness centers, a children's play area and landscaped rooftops.

Residents in the area told News 12 that the development will help alleviate the city's affordable housing crisis. Others said that bringing new residents to the area could create tension in the neighborhood.

The retail space is scheduled to open in January 2018. The affordable housing complex is expected to be opened by September 2018.
