Unique Bronx intersection gets much-needed traffic light

A unique intersection in Kingsbridge Heights that was the focus of safety concerns is set to get a traffic light.

Persistence from residents and politicians has paid off as the Department of Transportation is set to install a traffic light at the 'Y' shaped intersection of Heath Avenue and Fort Independence Street.

Right now there is only a yield sign on Fort Independence Street and a stop sign on Heath Avenue. That resulted in a lot of confusion for drivers and very little opportunity for the pedestrians to cross safely. The intersection is also located near a school, causing concern for parents and bus drivers.

The traffic light is expected to be installed by the end of July. DOT officials also plan to study the whole Fort Independence corridor to see if more safety improvements are needed.
