2 men accused in September home explosion face judge

Two men accused of being involved in a home explosion last September that killed an FDNY chief faced a judge Tuesday.

The first suspect, Garivaldi Castillo, is facing assault charges as well as criminal possession of marijuana.

The second suspect, Julio Salcedo, is accused of growing marijuana inside a Kingsbridge home and keeping flammable substances on the premises. He is being charged with first-degree assault, second-degree assault in injuring a firefighter and criminal possession of marijuana.

Police say both men are linked to a gas explosion that killed FDNY Deputy Chief Michael Fahy.

Authorities say the two men were operating an illegal marijuana grow house inside a West 234th Street home in Kingsbridge. The home contained marijuana plants the size of small trees. Officials have not charged either suspect with murder or manslaughter, but they are leaving open the possibility of upgrading the charges as the investigation continues.
