FDNY source: Slain EMT was mother of several kids

A man stole an ambulance from two EMT workers Thursday evening, then drove into them -- killing one and leaving the other hospitalized at Jacobi Medical Center.

An FDNY source tells News 12 that the victim who lost her life worked at the station near 169th Street and Boston Road.

She was the mother of several children and was dating an FDNY paramedic.

Police say a good Samaritan helped subdue the suspect before he could escape.

The mayor said the victim's identity was being withheld pending notification of her adult children. He said she was a 44-year-old with 14 years on the job.

"An emergency technician was lost in the line of duty, bravely doing her job," Mayor Bill de Blasio said. "They do crucial work, they save lives, but they should not have to face violence."
