Bronx, Tennessee HS bands connect through music
A marching band from Tennessee visited a Bronx high school to help students learn how music can connect different cultures.
The bands from Science Hill High School in Johnson City, Tennessee, and the High School of World Cultures on Boyton Avenue played back and forth to show their different styles.
"She had beginning students and ours are a little more advanced, and the idea was maybe they can see what they can aspire to do through practice," says Carson Vermillion, Science Hill High School's director of bands.
Lynda Alley, the High School of World Culture's music director, says the school has been working on starting up a band.
"It's a dual-language school and it's really exciting, but music is universal," Alley says.
Alley says the collaboration was exciting and that both schools' students needed to see cultures from across the country.
