Experts describe signs of human trafficking

As human trafficking continues to rise in the Bronx, experts on the issue trained residents to be more aware of its dangers.

The awareness event took place Thursday in Allerton.

Experts say human traffickers often message young people and promise them money to support their families.

They say some red flags are when someone is afraid to disclose their name or when individuals have bruises or unusual tattoos. They say if things look out of the ordinary, it might be a sign of human trafficking.

Police and the Bronx County District Attorney say they have stepped up their efforts on the issue. They say the NYPD's vice unit is using new strategies and has hired additional detectives.

The NYPD set up a sex trafficking hotline last months for victims or those concerned about someone. Officials say the hotline accepts anonymous calls and tips.
