Councilman: Drugs, garbage plague Hub open space

Councilman Rafael Salmanca Jr. says an open space in the South Bronx Hub needs to be cleaned up and cleared of illegal drug activity.

The open area is located at East 149th Street and Bergen Avenue, next to the recently opened Triangle Plaza Hub - a mixed-use office and retail space that opened back in July.

Salamanca says the space is dirty and not well-lit at night. He says he met last week with Triangle Equities, which owns the Hub properties.

On Tuesday, he released a letter demanding 24-hour surveillance cameras, the hiring of on-site security and more lighting during nighttime hours.

"It's a beautiful open space that should be available for residents in the community. But unfortunately, it's being used for other things," says Salamanca, citing drugs and loitering.

A spokesman for Triangle Equities told News 12, "It is unfortunate that some people misuse this space but we hope and expect that as economic growth continues in the community, any such misuse will be eliminated."
