DOT to make safety improvements in Dumbo
The Dumbo Business Improvement District and the city Department of Transportation are exploring safety changes for pedestrians and bicyclists under the Manhattan Bridge.
The area has a scenic view of the span and the Manhattan skyline, but there are no crosswalks, and the population has grown significantly.
The local BID says adding crosswalks, changes to traffic signal timing and a protected bike lane would improve safety.
"Our infrastructure was built for something completely different, so the geometry of the bridge and the streets was not made for strollers and bicycles," says Alexandria Sica, of the Dumbo BID.
Crews are expected to begin work this summer.
