'Fleet Week New York' expands to the Bronx

A merchant vessel will be docked at SUNY Maritime all weekend in honor of "Fleet Week New York."
The USNY Yuma, a U.S. Navy transport vessel, will be docked in town until Memorial Day. This is the first time "Fleet Week New York" has come to the Bronx.
The 338-foot-long ship was christened in 2016 and carries up to 600 tons of military cargo. The ship has a flight deck for helicopter operations and a ramp for vehicles to load and unload quickly.
"This ship is actually the newest ship in the military fleet as far as the expeditionary fast transport. It's not a traditional Navy vessel," says Military Sealift Commander Lori Cumbie. "This is a merchant vessel. It also has a special design and also aluminum."
The vessel is operated by military sealift command and is designed to support military operations, but not to be an active participant.
Officials will be giving tours all weekend to already registered participants.
Tours for the USNY Yuma have already been booked up. However, other vessels still have openings.
