Police: Mother that pushed child down stairs to appear in court Friday

A Bronx mother will appear before a judge today after witnesses say she pushed her toddler down a flight of subway stairs while the child was strapped in a stroller.

It happened Thursday afternoon at the Grand Concourse-East 149th Street station in Melrose.

Police say Jessica Mixon, 26, had gotten into a fight with the 2-year-old's father just before the incident.

Mixon will face several assault charges as a result.

Several eyewitnesses claim to have seen the event, including one that says Mixon was yelling, "I can't take the baby, I can't do it" before pushing the child down the stairs.

The toddler suffered a deep cut under his left eye, and was taken to a hospital for treatment. The mother underwent a psychiatric exam prior to her eventual appearance in court.
