An apartment fire in Morrisania on Monday has left one family homeless.

News 12 is told that the fire started on the second floor in the corner unit of an apartment on 163rd Street and was contained to one corner of the building.

A maintenance worker says he was replacing sheetrock just before 12 p.m. and smelled a strong odor. He and a neighbor then grabbed fire extinguishers and were able to somewhat control the flames.

Officials believe the fire started with hot plates inside of the unit.

A store on the ground level also suffered significant flooding from the fire upstairs.

Some residents suffered burns while exiting due to the heat from the metal railings of the fire escapes.

Those who suffered burns were treated by EMTs at the scene. An elderly woman was also transported to Jacobi Medical Center where she is expected to be OK.
