Bronx residents received some tips to help with their money problems Monday.

At a news conference, New York City Public Advocate Letitia James encouraged people to take advantage of community banks and credit unions in their neighborhood.

Financial experts were on hand to explain the importance of having good credit. They also clarified how local banks can help them do so.

"Community banks are different than conventional banks because they have service for the community, like the credit building loans," said financial counselor, Derison Puntier. "People use that for savings, to build or establish credit or to open up a savings account."

Advisers say residents who would like to set up a financial counseling appointment can call 311 to be connected with a financial counseling center.
