A Bronx woman says leaky pipes in her Mott Haven apartment have continued to get worse even after News 12 reported about the conditions two weeks ago.
Elizabeth Viorola says she constantly has to mop her floors due to the leak in her third-floor apartment at 225 East 149th St.
She says the leak got bigger over the weekend.
Viorola's 26-year-old son, Steve Tapia, says he is afraid for his and his mother's safety.
Earlier this month, the family says an electrical outlet caught fire in the apartment, and they believe it was because of the home's constant leaks.
"I'm afraid we are going to die in a fire," Tapia says.
Viorola's apartment complex, which consists of several buildings, is undergoing a $52 million makeover to its interior and exterior.
Michael Leconte, the president of BSR Management, which owns the building, says some of the pipes are 40 years old and that the company is working to replace all of them.
"This is a major plumbing issue," he says. "It's not that we are not aware about it. We're doing our best to fix it and we have come up with the whole plan to fix it."
According to BSR Management, the plumbing repairs to the building should be completed in about two weeks. After that, the company says there shouldn't be any more leaky pipes in Viorola's apartment.
