Some state lawmakers are looking to decriminalize the act of hopping subway turnstiles.
State Sen. Jesse Hamilton and Assemblywoman Tremaine Wright are introducing legislation that would make turnstile jumping a civil matter that would be punishable with a fine akin to a parking ticket.
There would be no potential arrest, imprisonment or criminal record. The lawmakers say that too many 16- and 17-year-olds are being arrested.
The NYPD says turnstile jumpers do receive a civil summons. If someone is found to be a repeat offender, for example having three or more unpaid summonses, they are "subject to arrest on a misdemeanor charge."
