376-day streak without shootings ends in Fordham Heights
A 376-day streak without shootings in part of the NYPD's 46th Precinct came to an end this week.
The anti-violence group Bronx Rises Against Gun Violence, known as BRAG, says it's been promoting peace along the 10-block stretch and plans to continue to do so.
According to the NYPD, the 46th Precinct in total has the most shooting victims out of all Bronx precincts so far this year with 27.
On Sunday, a man shot another man in the leg at Rulay Lounge on Jerome Avenue during an attempted robbery.
The last shooting in the neighborhood, known as a "catchment area," occurred on July 10, 2016. In 2015, the group says there were four shootings there. In 2014, there were eight.
BRAG says it hires local residents who have left their violent pasts behind. They receive training on how to respond to shootings in a way that helps discourage retaliation.
