Longwood tenants sue landlord after fire

LONGWOOD -

Longwood tenants are suing their landlord after some of them say they were nearly killed in a fire last month.

Cellphone video captured the chaotic moments that tenants at 851 East 163rd St. went through in July as flames engulfed several units, displacing many tenants. Ten people were injured in the blaze.

Mukhtar Ali was at work when his second-floor apartment went up in flames. He says he blames his landlord for not fixing an ongoing electrical problem that is believed to have caused the fire. Tenants say the building has been the site of four electrical fires in recent years.

Ali and at least two other families are still without homes. So they have joined forces with local leaders to call on their landlord to fix the building's issues.

In addition to electrical problems, burnt ceilings and walls, tenants say the building also has sinking bathrooms floors, shower heads that can't be turned off and extensive mold.

The building has more than 200 open violations with the city.

News 12 reached out to the landlord for comment, but did not hear back.
