Residents voice concern over collapsed sidewalk near school

THE BRONX -

As a new school year is just around the corner, some families are concerned about their children’s safety around a collapsed sidewalk.

The sidewalk is located directly in front of P.S. 132, and has been described by neighbors as a "hole."

Community activist Sydney Flores noticed the collapsing sidewalk on Washington Avenue last year, and says the sidewalk now has a huge hole in it.

"My concern now is with school starting … that as kids walk past it this sidewalk doesn't continue to cave in, children could get hurt," says Flores.

The hole is an issue for many Claremont residents because it not only neighbors a school, but also a park.

The area has barricades around it, but Flores says if the entire section collapses, it could pull people down with it.

News 12 reached out to the Department of Transportation, but hasn't received a response yet.
