The city's 3-K For All program, which provides free pre-K for kids, kicked off Thursday in the Bronx and Brooklyn.
Pre-K classrooms in School District 7 in the South Bronx and School District 23 in Brooklyn welcomed 1,400 new students.
Mayor Bill de Blasio says the typical New York family will spend between $10,000 and $15,000 per year for pre-K.
The mayor walked one of the new 3-year-old students from the Bronx to his classroom at P.S. 277 for the very first time.
By 2020, the city hopes to expand the program to at least six more districts, and eventually citywide.
